That story is similar to Jung’s response to hypnosis. He hypnotized a woman who went under and had a powerful experience she claimed healed her and he didn’t have a clue how.
So he stopped working with hypnosis and started working with the unconscious via dream work, active imagination, analysis, and in his own life ritual and art.
Personally, I avoid using hypnosis for anything other than behavioral suggestions or implanting new narratives that help people step forward. The rest I leave to dream work and active imagination.
In my own life, I use a lot of writing, dream work, and active imagination and can tell you the results are incredibly powerful.
These techniques, however, are much different than a stage performance as they seek to make the unconscious conscious rather than simply manipulate an action.
It is by making the unconscious conscious that we better understand yourselves and often times can create defenses against being manipulated by others.
