I remember being desperate to change.
Knowing in my soul that if I didn’t overcome the obstacles of my life, I’d drown.
I love researching and learning so I gathered plenty of perspectives, plenty of tools, tried every method I came across, but nothing stuck.
I knew so much but I couldn’t save myself.
Not until I started to put all the pieces together in effective daily habits. Starting small and working my way up.
Through this work I overcame:
- Anxiety
- Life Long Depression
- PTSD
- Lead Poisoning
- Codependency
- Alcoholism
- Porn Addiction
- Cigarette Smoking
- Marijuana Dependency
I’ve also been able to greatly reduce my manic episodes from week-long spin outs to a couple hours once or twice a year.
As you can see, I’ve had plenty of struggles. Some of them took years to overcome, some of them have simply melted away.
Ironically, the less attention I paid to the addictions, the more they simply dissolved. I spent years struggling with each one.
But the demon I was wrestling with caused all my focus to be hyper-concentrated in one area of life. I lost sight of the bigger picture, of myself as a dynamic individual.
All I could see was the tunnel vision of an addiction that was consuming me.
When my focus shifted and I started working on other areas of my life the addictions faded out one at a time.
Not that they all went away in a nice succession. No, I didn’t learn my lesson that easily. I’d obsess and focus on one, hit an area of life where my attention shifted, that addiction would go away and then I’d focus on fighting the next one.
The fighting didn’t help much, what worked was treating myself as a dynamic individual. An individual who recognized that all areas of my life are interconnected and affect the other.
I revamped my entire diet, worked on nutrition, came to understand the truth that we really are what we eat and if I don’t give my body what it needs I can’t possibly reach the states of health and success I’m striving for.
This work worked because I used those material components from nutrition to build a new mindset that I sculpted through experience, exploration, and education. Changing the way I saw and interacted with the world.
This work worked because I dug in deep beneath the thoughts on the surface of my mind and through meditation, self-exploration, writing, and writhing with the human experience I began to discover and heal the wounds so near my core.
This work worked because I began to nurture and care for myself on all levels of my being.
Never forget that who you are is more than an “I,” more than a singular subject.
You are a story, a planet, a world, and all its history.
Your consciousness is composed of mind and trillions of cells embodied. Your past lives through you in the structures of your brain and the ways your muscle and nerves hold memory.
If you are looking to create long-lasting change you’re going to need to address every part of yourself.
It may sound overwhelming but all you have to do is take one small step at a time.
The trick is to make sure that you are taking small steps while maintaining your awareness that you can’t fix it all by going down just one road.
True change requires:
- Bodily Change
- Behavioral Change
- Cognitive Change
And quite often it requires deep inner work to discover and heal the underlying conditions that created the cognitive and behavioral habits that have shaped you so far.
Conclusion:
If you are finding yourself running up against a wall when it comes to your personal transformation, you may be leaving out a part of yourself.
Rather than try to master a whole area of life while leaving others undeveloped, try to chip away at each part of your life a little bit at a time.
